This website aims to inform about powwows in Germany. It is a calendar of events and a platform for all those who are interested in the contemporary culture of North American Indians. This site is open to everyone. We are delighted about any type of participation and cooperation. The Powwow culture has spread outside the US and Canada. In the whole of Germany will find these festivals take place for several decades. It has developed a large powwow scene; Interested travel long distances back to sing and dance – thus many friendships have been formed. Again in Germany use the dancers a lot of effort and time for the dance training and the production of outfits.

Powwows in Denmark
If you visit the Native Americans living in the US or Canada today, you are most likely to be invited to a powwow. A powwow is a gathering That celebrates the Native American history and culture. A powwow lasts from one evening that three or four days, and here people from all tribes meet to sing, dance, socialize with friends and family and honor traditions.

Powwows are also held in other countries dry as Denmark, Sweden, England, Germany and many others. These powwows are most often hosted by non-Indians who like powwows and RESPECT the Native American ways, and to hosting powwows they also show That the Native American culture is alive, evolving and changing, enlightening people (especially children) who think That the Native American still live in teepees and dress the way they did a hundred years ago.

Generally there are two types of powwows: Community powwows That are small, local powwows with few Participants, and contest powwows Characterized by singing and dancing contests and big price money for the winners. Powwows hosted in Denmark are very much like the small community powwows with one or two drum groups and with exhibition dancing instead of contests. Danish powwows follow the traditions of the Lakota / Sioux tribes based on friendships with members of the Brulé and Oglala nations from Rosebud and Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

The first Danish powwows were held in the mid-1980s, where a group of Lakota teachers from Sinte Gleska University and a group of dancers and singers Angielski came to Denmark that teach about modern American Indian culture. This was arranged by the Danish-American Indian Association (Dansk Forening-Indian) That hosted a row of annual summer seminars. Now there are about 50 dancers with outfits and two drum groups in Denmark, and many Danes have traveled a powwows in the US and Canada. Furthermore, the friendship has emerged between groups of Danish and Swedish dancers and singers with a great deal of cross-border interaction.

Their fascination with Native culture is due in large part to Karl May, the best-selling German author of all time. In 1892, May published the first of many books about a fictional Apache warrior named Winnetou and his German blood brother, Old Shatterhand. The two men roamed the North American plains, using their nearly superhuman powers to fight off the land-hungry government and thuggish, violent pioneers. (Fans of the stories included Albert Einstein and Adolf Hitler.) In the 1960s the duo was immortalized in five popular films, and hobbyist groups began forming across Europe. In our International Issue, we asked the age-old question: Why do 40,000 Germans spend their weekends dressed as Native Americans? We know this much: it has something to do with Karl May, the best-selling German author of all time. In Der Indianer, reprinted from Alberta Views, we learn that “in 1892, May published the first of many books about a fictional Apache warrior named Winnetou and his German blood brother, Old Shatterhand. The two men roamed the North American plains, using their nearly superhuman powers to fight off the land-hungry government and thuggish, violent pioneers.”

Now we’ve stumbled upon photographs from a Karl May festival in Austria. Whatever it is that is happening here, it seems to be spreading.

“Indians” in Russia – It’s not a fairy tale!

Turns out its not a fairy tale, and that in fact Eastern Europe is full of people who legitimately pow wow. They aren’t Ongwehowe at all but have devoted their lives to researching Ongwehowe ceremonies, traditions, crafts and dancing. The Pow Wow People of Russia have actually created an entire sub-culture of weekend indigenous life right in the middle of Europe. They have retreats where they will sleep in tipis that they make themselves, hold sweats, have naming ceremonies and hold dance contests – “just like the red man”. Read entire article
